Be Prepared

The Rocky Mountains and San Juan Mountains are central to many people who live locally and an escape for many from other parts of the country. Their beauty and peace is humbling, though it presents dangers we often don't think of. When planning a visit you should always be prepared, as you never know what could happen. Please see the list below of recommended items to take with you and steps you can take to ensure safety.

  • Communicate where you are going, and when you will be back, so Search and Rescue can be notified as quickly as possible if an emergency occurs

  • Essential Items to Bring with you:

    • Flash Light and Extra Batteries

    • Fire Starter

    • Extra Layers

    • Sugary drink like Orange Juice

    • Always bring more water than you expect to drink

    • Protein rich snacks

    • Compact sized first aid kit for basic first aid treatment

    • Bear mace, or an alternative effective for protection

    • When snowmobiling make sure you always have your Beacon on and test prior to leaving to ensure it is working properly

If an emergency occurs, or you get lost, stay where you are! The more you wander you run the risk of getting more lost and extending search times. Every minute counts for the search and rescue teams, especially if you are injured. Staying put ensures the quickest possible response and best outcome.
